PC: Impact Resistant, Transparent, and Heat Resistant

PC: High-impact, transparent and heat-resistant

We offer a wide range of materials, but polycarbonate, often abbreviated to PC, is one of the most interesting. It stands out for its high impact resistance, which is around 250 times greater than that of ordinary glass. What makes PC so special, and how can it be used?

Properties and benefits

High impact resistance is one of the most important properties of PC. The material’s molecular structure gives it flexibility and the ability to absorb impacts. Furthermore, PC can withstand high temperatures, up to 130°C. This makes it suitable for environments with high temperatures or mechanical stress.

PC is also known for its clarity, which is important in applications where good visibility is required. Combined with its high impact resistance, this makes PC a good choice for, for example, safety glass and protective screens in machinery.

UV sensitivity and processing

One of the few drawbacks of PC is that it is sensitive to UV radiation. Prolonged exposure to sunlight can lead to degradation and reduced clarity. This can be counteracted by using UV-stabilised grades or by applying a UV-protective coating.

When machining PC, it is important to use suitable tools and methods. Standard metalworking tools can be used, but care and precision are required. The correct cutting tools and angles are also important to avoid cracks.

Applications and comparison with PMMA

PC is used in many applications, such as machine guards, safety glass, lighting and electronics. Safety and visibility are key factors where PC is a good choice.

PC is often compared with PMMA, also known as acrylic. PC has higher impact strength and temperature resistance, whilst PMMA is clearer and usually cheaper. The choice depends on what is most important for the specific application.

We offer PC that provides a good balance between impact resistance and machinability.
