Plastic Materials That Withstand Tough Conditions in Water Purification

Plastics in water treatment: Which materials are up to the job?

Water treatment is a complex process in which components are constantly exposed to aggressive chemicals. Which plastic materials can you actually rely on in that environment?

Chemical resistance is paramount. Chlorine, acids and alkalis can quickly break down materials that aren’t designed for the task. That’s why we must choose carefully.

Materials that stand the test

We offer several plastics that are well suited for use in water treatment plants. Some examples include PP, PVDF, PE-HD (also known as PEHD or PE-300) and PTFE. They all have good chemical resistance and can be used in many different applications.

PP and PE-HD are often used to manufacture tanks and pipes. PVDF and PTFE are better suited to filter housings and other components that require extremely high resistance.

PTFE stands out for its exceptional chemical resistance. The material can withstand environments where other plastics would quickly corrode or be damaged.

Applications in water treatment

A water treatment system comprises many components: tanks, pipework, filter housings, support structures and more. All of these must withstand the chemicals used in the process and the physical stresses to which they are subjected.

We can help you choose the right material for each application. PE-HD is a good choice for tanks and pipes, thanks to its high resistance to both chemicals and mechanical stress. PVDF is an excellent option for filter housings, as it withstands harsh chemical environments.

What happens if you take a chance and choose the wrong material? The components may corrode, leak or even break. This, in turn, can have a negative impact on water quality.

Important to bear in mind

When selecting plastic for water treatment equipment, you must also take the operating conditions into account. The temperature and pressure within the system are important factors, as is the concentration of chemicals.

Regular maintenance is also important. If the components are not properly maintained, they can weaken and fail prematurely.

Have you considered the specific requirements your application places on the materials?
