Think about the operating environment. The rubber is happiest at normal indoor temperature and in dry to slightly damp environments. Under a long standing load the tread can take a temporary flat spot that rolls out after a while, which is normal for soft materials. On very light floors dark rubber should be tested first, since in some cases it can leave marks.

Industrial caster in a fixed bracket with an 85 Shore A rubber tread and sheet steel hub

This is an industrial caster in a fixed bracket with a rubber tread at 85 Shore A and a hub in sheet steel. The caster is meant for indoor transport where you want a quiet and shock absorbed run, but with a steadier hub than the light plastic versions give. The rubber tread takes care of unevenness and noise, while the sheet metal hub holds the wheel in shape.

The rubber tread is soft and springs lightly against the floor. That gives a good grip and a smooth run even where the surface has joints or small dips, and the goods on the cart shake less. At 85 Shore A the tread is at the firmer end of the rubber scale, which means it damps well but is still not compressed as much as a really soft rubber. The rolling resistance is therefore somewhat lower than on a softer tread, but still higher than on a hard plastic wheel, since rubber always costs a little in rolling force.

Compared with a hard wheel in nylon the choice is about character. The hard wheel rolls most easily and carries the most, but it is noisy and hard on the floor. The rubber wheel is quieter and gentler, but gives up load. Here the load capacity is up to 230 kg per wheel, which places the series in the lighter segment where comfort and a low noise level weigh more than maximum weight.

The hub in sheet steel, pressed sheet metal, is a common and stable solution on standard wheels. It gives the wheel a stiff core without becoming unnecessarily heavy. In the hub sits a roller bearing, which takes high radial load and gives a steady run under load. The roller bearing is tough and suits well when the wheel is to carry properly in its weight class and be run regularly.

The wheels come in diameters from 160 to 250 mm. These are consistently larger diameters, which makes the wheel roll easily over thresholds, cable ducts and floor joints and keeps the rolling resistance down. The larger diameter suits carts where easy rolling is prioritized over a low overall height. The caster is mounted with a top plate, a four hole plate that is screwed onto the underframe and gives a stable mounting.

The bracket is fixed, so the wheel rolls straight ahead without swiveling. It works as the direction giving caster under a cart, preferably paired with swivel casters at the other end so the rig both runs straight and can be steered.

Where does it fit? Under transport carts, material carts and roller tables in warehouses and workshops, especially where the floor has unevenness and where a low noise level is wanted. The large diameters make the caster comfortable to push even over longer distances. The soft tread makes it suitable on painted concrete and tiles where marks are to be avoided.
