Pneumatic caster in a fixed bracket with sheet steel hub and top plate

This is a pneumatic caster in a fixed bracket with a tread in air-filled rubber, a hub in sheet steel and a top plate for mounting, built for transport on uneven ground where shaking must not carry up into the goods. The tread is an air-filled tire with a hardness of around 65 degrees Shore A. The air in the tire works as a spring and takes the shocks from gravel, joints and thresholds, so the running is soft and the goods shake less.

The way the tread behaves in motion is worth understanding. An air-filled tire rolls easily over uneven ground because it shapes itself to the surface instead of bouncing over every obstacle. On a smooth, hard floor the rolling resistance is higher in return, since a larger contact patch deforms with every turn. Pneumatic rubber therefore belongs outdoors and on rough surfaces, less so on clean hall floors. The air pressure governs the behavior; too little pressure gives heavy rolling and faster wear.

A short comparison helps the choice. A harder wheel in solid polyurethane or nylon rolls most easily on a level floor and takes high point loads, but every bump goes straight up into the structure. This pneumatic caster sacrifices some rolling resistance on smooth ground in exchange for absorbing shocks on rough ground. If the load is driven outdoors on uneven ground, the springy tire is the gentle option.

The sheet steel hub is pressed and holds the tire stable under load. The series comes with double ball bearings or roller bearings. Double ball bearings put the load on two rows of balls and give even running, while roller bearings take up high radial load. The load capacity reaches up to 250 kg per wheel, which suits medium-heavy transport carts and hand carts.

The wheels come in diameters from 260 to 400 mm. A larger diameter rolls more easily over obstacles and lowers the rolling resistance, while a smaller one keeps the overall height down where space is tight. The wheel sits in a fixed bracket and rolls straight ahead, which gives good directional stability in fixed positions. The bracket is mounted with a top plate and four screw holes against a flat mounting point, a simple installation that sits firmly.

Where does it fit? Pneumatic casters with a fixed bracket and a top plate sit under transport carts, tow carts, garden carts and material carts that are run both indoors and outdoors. The springy tread makes the combination suitable on asphalt with joints, packed gravel, paved yards and tiled floors with grout lines, where a stiff wheel would pass the shaking on to the load.

Think about the operating environment. Air-filled tires handle wet conditions and normal outdoor temperatures but need the right air pressure for full load capacity, and they can be punctured by sharp objects like any other tire. If the wheel stands still under load for a long time it keeps its shape well thanks to the air. Check the pressure at regular intervals and the wheel will roll easily and last longer.
