Threaded plugs SP30 are protective plugs in soft LDPE for internal threads. The plug screws into the threaded hole and protects the thread against chips, dirt, moisture and knocks until it is time for assembly; at the same time the flange covers the edge of the hole and makes the plug easy to thread in and out by hand.

The series covers nine sizes from M14 to M52. The flange diameter grows with the thread size, from 20 mm up to 60 mm, and the threaded section is between 13.5 and 17.5 mm long depending on size; that is enough for the plug to sit firmly without bottoming out in normal thread depths. The color is matte signal red, so the plugs are easy to spot during inspection and do not get passed over at final assembly. You pick the size as a variant on the product page.

LDPE is the right material for the job for several reasons. It is soft and tough, so the plastic thread springs against the flanks of the steel thread and stays put through handling and transport without ever damaging the hole. It stands up to oils, cutting fluid residue and normal workshop chemicals. And it is cheap enough to be used as a single-use protector in shipments, while a plug in internal handling can be reused over and over.

The need turns up everywhere threaded holes are machined at one stage and used at another. Machined blocks and castings that leave the machining center with finished threaded holes and then have to be washed, transported and stored. Hydraulic manifolds whose ports have to be kept free of particles; a single metal chip in the wrong port can knock out a valve much later. Parts that are surface finished, where the plug masks the thread against paint and blasting media so that it is clean and ready to assemble afterwards. Just keep in mind that LDPE softens at moderate heat and should not follow the part into the curing oven with oven-dried paint.

The flange does more good than you first think. It seals mechanically against the edge of the hole so that coarse dirt does not work its way down along the thread, it protects the flat face closest to the hole against knocks, and it gives a finger grip in both directions. In tight assembly positions it is a clear advantage to be able to unscrew the protector without tools.

Picking a size is straightforward: the plug marked M24 fits an M24 hole, with no measuring or adaptation. If the part also has external threads to protect, there are threaded caps in the matching version in the same family, and if you need sealing plugs with an O-ring for moisture-sensitive ports, those are in the range as well. Dimensions per size are given in the manufacturer's data sheet.

At the low end the series starts at M14, which covers most hydraulic ports and coarser threaded holes in machine building; for smaller holes there is a sister series with an O-ring that goes down to M8. Storage out in the weather is another typical case. Castings standing in the yard between operations otherwise collect water in every open threaded hole, and a fitted plug means the rust cleanup never has to happen at all. That is the kind of detail that does not show up in the costing but is felt in the daily workshop routine.

A practical tip from the shop floor: standardize on the signal color as a status marker. As long as there is red showing on the part it is not finished, and that rule is easy to keep alive in both planning and final inspection.
