Swivel caster as a twin wheel in PUR with PC hub
This is a swivel twin wheel, a swivel caster where two wheels sit side by side and the bracket rotates freely through 360 degrees. The tread is cast polyurethane, PUR, with a hardness of 98 degrees Shore A, and the hubs are in polycarbonate, PC. The combination of a swivel bracket and two wheels side by side gives both easy maneuvering and stable running, which makes the wheel easy to steer in tight spaces without the cart feeling wobbly.
How does the tread behave in service? PUR at 98 Shore A is semi hard. It gives low rolling resistance and a high load capacity, so the wheel starts easily and rolls evenly even loaded. Sharing the load across two contact surfaces lowers the surface pressure and makes the wheel roll more smoothly over joints and small unevenness than a single wheel of the same diameter would. The polyurethane takes wear, oil and grease and is gentler on the floor than a hard plastic tread.
A comparison helps. A softer elastic wheel would damp more and run more quietly but carry less and roll harder. A fully hard wheel would roll a little more easily but make more noise and be harder on the floor. The semi hard PUR tread gives a balanced mix: smooth to swivel, load bearing and reasonably gentle on the floor.
The hubs in polycarbonate are stiff and light and take moisture without rusting. PC is a dimensionally stable material that holds the geometry of the wheel even under load, which helps the swivel unit run true. The swivel bracket turns easily so that the wheel constantly lines itself up with the direction of travel, which is what makes a swivel caster so maneuverable.
The wheels come in diameters from 50 to 75 mm and carry up to 90 kg depending on the model. A larger diameter rolls more easily over thresholds and joints, while a smaller one keeps the overall height down. Mounting is with a bolt hole, a through hole, so the wheel is fastened with a single bolt through the swivel unit on chassis that have a centered mounting. The series comes with both a wheel brake and a total lock brake: the wheel brake locks only the rolling, while the total lock brake also blocks the swivel so that the whole caster stands still during loading.
Where does it fit? Swivel twin wheels in PUR often sit under roll carts, picking carts, serving trolleys and lighter machine bases where good maneuvering in tight aisles matters. The wide contact area gives steadiness, and the swivel bracket makes the cart easy to angle in toward shelves and work stations indoors.
Think about the operating environment. PUR is happy at normal indoor temperature and in dry to slightly damp environments. If the wheel stands still for a long time under load, the tread can get a temporary impression that rolls out after a while, which is normal for elastic materials. For a stable cart you should usually mix swivel casters with fixed ones in a well thought out placement.
