Loose wheel in ElastoGum with cast iron hub
This is a loose wheel with a tread in ElastoGum and a hub in cast iron, built for heavy transport indoors where the load is high but the floor and the goods still have to be treated gently. The tread is an elastic rubber with a hardness of 75 degrees Shore A. That gives a damping, quiet run while the tread is firm enough to carry a real load under heavy weight.
The tread decides how the wheel behaves at work. Rubber in this hardness range has a moderate rolling resistance; it takes a little more force to set a heavy load in motion than with a hard wheel, but in return the wheel rolls quietly and catches impacts from joints, seams and small unevenness before they come through to the goods. The firm rubber tread does not compress as much as a really soft version, which keeps the rolling resistance reasonable even when the weight is high. Compared with a hard wheel in nylon, which rolls the easiest and takes the same loads but makes noise and can scratch or mark the floor, ElastoGum with a cast iron hub is the choice when heavy transport has to run quietly and spare the ground.
The cast iron hub is the backbone of the wheel. It is stiff, carries the highest loads and holds its shape even at great weight; that is why the series handles load capacities up to 1200 kg per wheel. Cast iron is heavier than light metal and plastic, but it is exactly that mass and stiffness that give the high load capacity. Inside the hub sit double ball bearings that spread the load over two rows of balls and give an even run under heavy load.
The wheels come in diameters from 100 to 400 mm. A larger diameter rolls considerably more easily over thresholds, joints and cable ducts and lowers the rolling resistance, which is worth a lot when the load is high, while a smaller one keeps the overall height down where space is limited. Since the wheel is delivered without a bracket, it is mounted directly on an axle of its own through the hub, which suits heavy fixed rigs and self-built underframes.
Where does it fit? ElastoGum with a cast iron hub is a durable work wheel for heavy indoor transport in industry and warehousing. It often sits under heavy transport carts, machine underframes, platform carts and stands for tools and molds. The damping tread makes it a good choice on painted concrete, ground concrete and tile, especially where heavy loads would otherwise make noise or mark the floor.
Think about the operating environment. Rubber treads are happy at normal indoor temperature and in dry to slightly damp environments. The cast iron hub is strong but can rust in wet spaces, so for really damp environments a corrosion-resistant hub can be better. If the wheel stands still for a long time under full load, the tread can take a temporary flat spot that rolls out after a while; that is normal for elastic materials and it gets more pronounced the heavier the load is.
