PEEK Mod is PEEK modified with solid lubricant additives. The sheet keeps the base properties of PEEK in place (around 260 degrees continuous, 300 degrees short term, V0 and low water absorption around 0.03 percent), but the additive lowers the coefficient of friction against the mating surface and improves the wear profile in dry running. The density is around 1.44 g/cm³ and the tensile strength around 84 MPa. The thermal conductivity, around 0.82 W/mK, is noticeably higher than pure PEEK, which carries frictional heat away from bearings and sliding surfaces.
The additives are typically a combination of PTFE, graphite and carbon fiber. PTFE contributes low friction against the mating surface, graphite makes the material less sensitive to start-stop loads, and the carbon fiber raises stiffness and wear resistance. The impact strength is around 28 kJ/m², which is lower than pure PEEK but acceptable for sliding components where the loads are even. Ball indentation hardness around 250 MPa.
The sheet format is made for designs where large sliding surfaces are cut or milled out. Typical parts are slide strips in high temperature ovens, axial thrust washers in pumps, wear surfaces in conveyor systems that run hot, seat plates in valves where lubrication is hard to maintain, and flat plain bearings in compact chassis. The raised thermal conductivity is valuable in bearings where frictional heat otherwise risks building up local hotspots.
Chemically the material takes most solvents, oils, alkaline cleaning agents and diluted acids. Since PTFE is part of the additive, the surface resists chemical attack well, but contact us with questions about specific fluids and temperatures; some combinations call for a different grade. The material picks up almost no moisture, which keeps the dimensions stable in condensing environments.
Choosing between pure PEEK and PEEK Mod comes down to what the application demands. For plain mechanical strength and the highest impact toughness, unreinforced PEEK is often better. For sliding contact against steel or another polymer, where friction and wear set the design, the Mod grade wins in practical operation. Under extreme load where stiffness matters most, a carbon fiber reinforced grade (PEEK CF30) can be the better choice.
Machining is done with carbide tools. The carbon fiber content is lower than in CF30 or CF50, so tool life is longer. Sharp inserts, moderate cooling and chip control give a fine surface. The lower friction can be felt in machining, since the chips slide away more easily, which calls for solid clamping on flat parts. Grinding dust should be extracted and handled with respiratory protection.
Black Mod in 1000 x 610 mm is the bearing grade with carbon fiber, graphite and PTFE blended in, made for plain bearings and slide plates that have to run dry.
The sheet comes in several thicknesses and is cut on a saw or a water jet to the section you want. We are happy to talk through the choice of PEEK grade based on load case, mating material and operating temperature, just get in touch.
