POM is already one of the most dimensionally stable polymer materials in the workshop range, with a water absorption below one percent. POM W is optimized for applications where the part lives in water, not next to it. Designed with dimensional stability and hydrolysis resistance in mind, it keeps its properties in a damp environment, even over long service times.
The density is the POM-typical 1.4 g/cm³. The long-term temperature holds around 100 degrees continuously and the material works down to minus 40 degrees. The fire rating is HB. Water absorption stops at around 0.8 percent at saturation, but the important part is that it does not keep travelling inward over time the way some nylon grades do. For the designer that means a POM W part has a predictable shape and clearance whether it runs for 6 hours or 6 years.
Chemically POM is a reliable all-rounder as usual. Fuels, mineral oils, greases, weak bases and many organic solvents are handled without further ado. Strong acids and oxidizing agents are to be avoided. Chlorinated water in high concentrations wears on most POM grades; for pools and industrial chlorination you should size with a margin or choose another plastic family.
The sheet format suits milling, sawing and water jet cutting. The material gives clean chips and fine surface finishes and holds tolerances well. The inserts do not wear noticeably faster than against POM C. Common components out of a POM W sheet:
Pump housings and pump components for clean water and process liquids.
Slide plates in clean water systems and drinking water plants.
Guide strips in washing and disinfection machines.
Components in launchable installations and marine applications.
Parts in irrigation systems and water treatment equipment.
When choosing thickness: allow for machining stock and keep in mind that thick POM sheets can carry internal stresses from extrusion. Careful removal in several passes lowers the risk of deformation after the last cut. For welding, standard POM procedure applies, and hot air welding with the correct rod works well.
POM W is not right everywhere. If you need food approval, POM C FG is a clearer choice. If you need metal detection, POM MD is the one. If you need self-lubricating properties in dry running, POM LF fits. POM W is specifically for a constantly damp environment or one directly exposed to water, where dimensional stability is priority one.
Natural colored square 1000x1000 mm in acetal copolymer, for guides and sliding parts that meet hot water and repeated cleaning.
The sheet is supplied in standard sizes and common thicknesses from about 10 millimeters and up. Cut to size when you order. Do you need help choosing between POM W and POM C for your application, or working out what the chlorine level in your system does to the material? Get in touch.
