A round rod in PEKEKK is a blank for turned and milled components where thermal load is the governing factor. The material keeps its stiffness and dimensional stability at temperatures that take most other thermoplastics out of service.
PEKEKK belongs to the polyaryletherketone family and sits a notch above PEEK in temperature capacity. The service temperature is 260 °C continuous, and short peaks up to 300 °C are tolerated without the material breaking down. The density is 1.32 g/cm³ and the tensile strength according to ISO 527 is measured at 134 MPa. The ball indentation hardness of 275 MPa gives a hard surface that takes both load and abrasion. The material is rated V0 according to UL 94, which means self extinguishing behavior in a fire. The water absorption sits around 0.03 percent, that is to say vanishingly low, which means tolerances are held even in damp environments.
In round rod form the material can be machined in conventional metalworking machines with carbide tools. Turning, milling and drilling work with controlled feeds and moderate cooling; for long components, stress relieving before final machining is recommended to minimize stresses from the extrusion.
Typical applications are bearing bushings in furnaces and dryers, insulating components in semiconductor manufacturing, support rings in high temperature valve systems and shafts in equipment that works near molten metal or a steam environment. The material also shows up in aircraft engines and in measuring equipment where the dimensions have to hold through temperature swings between room temperature and several hundred degrees. Thanks to the high tensile strength and stiffness, components can be dimensioned thinner than the same part in lower grade thermoplastics, which is valuable where installation space is limited.
PEKEKK is usually supplied in its natural color with a dark, opaque tone. Standard diameters run from a few millimeters up to over 100 mm, and lengths are cut as needed. Keep in mind that the material is among the more expensive in the range, so dimension close to the final size to minimize chips.
Choosing between PEEK and PEKEKK, temperature is the simplest guide. If the operating temperature sits below 240 °C, PEEK is normally enough; if it has to work steadily above that limit, or if the design tolerates only very small margins through heat cycling, PEKEKK is the right choice. With 3000 mm to cut from, the black rod gives long runs of turned high temperature parts.
