Round Rod in PPA 1000 mm natural

The round rod in PPA is a good starting point when PA6 or PA6.6 is not enough on heat or chemistry, but where PEEK is oversized for the job. The polyphthalamide is built on aromatic acids in the polymer chain, which lifts the heat deflection resistance markedly and at the same time lowers water absorption compared with ordinary nylons.

For a turned or milled part there are two practical consequences that matter most. One is that the dimensions stay stable even when the humidity varies; with PA6 the dimensions wander a couple of tenths per percent of moisture uptake, and that shows in fits and bearings. The other is that hardness and creep resistance under long term load at raised temperature are clearly better. Fire rating HB.

The round rod is used for a long list of parts:

bushings and plain bearings in hydraulics and pneumatics

spacer tubes and turned parts in actuators

insulators and cable feed-throughs in switchgear

track and guide elements in conveyors and packaging machines

pump impellers and wear rings in chemical dosing equipment

Machining resembles PA6.6 but calls for a little more care in the choice of tool. A sharp edge, moderate feed and continuous chip evacuation keep the workpiece cool. High cutting speeds work well; melting occurs at very high local temperatures or if the chips pack together. Polishing and grinding work well for tight fits and fine surfaces.

Supplied in grades from unreinforced (softer, better impact strength and wear pattern against the mating part) up to glass fiber and carbon fiber reinforced (stiffer, more dimensionally stable under load, harder on the mating part). Choose by load case: plain bearings against steel are often happiest in unreinforced or modified PPA, load-carrying structural elements suit a fiber reinforced grade better. The natural color sits in the range white to faintly yellow; darker grades occur in the reinforced qualities.

The sizes normally cover the range from small diameters for bushings up to heavier rods for frame and pump parts, in lengths around a meter. Store in dry packaging; even though PPA takes up little water compared with PA, the material lives better if it does not have to be conditioned several times.
