Round rod in PPE gives you an engineering material that behaves stably even when the surroundings shift between dry and humid. Polyphenylene ether has a water absorption of around 0.1 percent, which means a turned part keeps its dimensions even after a long time in contact with water or high humidity. It is one of the most hydrolysis resistant engineering plastics and takes hot water and steam considerably better than polycarbonate and nylon.
The material has a continuous service temperature around 100 degrees and takes more than that for short periods. The lower limit sits around minus 20 degrees. The fire rating is HB. The density is about 1.1 g/cm3, which gives relatively light parts compared with other engineering polymers. PPE has good impact resistance across a wide temperature range and reasonable stiffness, even without glass fiber reinforcement. The material resists water soluble acids and bases, along with certain salts, but is attacked by aromatic and chlorinated solvents.
In round rod, PPE is often used for turned and milled components in process industry, healthcare and electronics. Classic examples are sleeves and bushings in pump and valve housings where the material has to take hot water and cleaning agents. The material is also used in insulators and holders for electrical components, since it has good electrical insulation and stays dimensionally stable even in a humid environment. Sterilization with steam or hot water works without the rod bowing or cracking.
The machining is uncomplicated. PPE can be turned, milled, drilled and tapped with standard tools for thermoplastics. Cutting speeds are close to those for POM, with flood or air cooling to keep the heat down during longer operations. The material is not especially notch sensitive, but sharp inward corners should be softened with a small radius to avoid stress concentrations. Bonding is possible with certain adhesives, mechanical fastening works well and the material can be screwed directly without a threaded insert at moderate loads.
When choosing PPE against something like PC or PA, weigh in water absorption, temperature and chemical environment. PPE wins when the part has to handle hot water, steam and moisture without dimensional drift. PC is a better choice if optical clarity or higher impact strength is decisive. PA takes higher point loads but soaks up moisture and moves. For environments with aggressive solvents there are more chemically resistant alternatives such as PVDF or PEEK.
Round rods are supplied cut in manageable lengths and with diameters suited to turning blanks. If you need a specific length or a ready cut blank, we help you with that. Get in touch if you want to discuss the material choice or bring in dimensions that are not listed as standard stock.
The 3000 mm length in gray gives plenty of material for turned parts.
