Round rod in PPS gives you a high temperature material that turns well and handles 220 degrees continuously, and more for short periods. Polyphenylene sulfide is semicrystalline with a density around 1.36 g/cm3 and a V0 fire rating. Water absorption sits at 0 percent, which means a turned bushing or part does not move in a damp environment. That is a combination few engineering plastics can match without landing in the PEEK price class.
The chemical resistance is unusually broad. PPS stands up to most acids, bases, salts and organic solvents up to around 200 degrees. Only strongly oxidizing acids such as concentrated nitric acid or concentrated sulfuric acid at high temperature attack the material. That makes the round rod useful in pumps and valves for chemical transfer, in components for heat exchangers and in structural parts for process equipment where the operating temperature is above what POM and PA can handle.
Mechanically PPS is stiff and has good creep resistance, even at raised temperature. Preload in bolted joints is held better than in most other thermoplastics. The material is not especially impact tough, though, and should not be exposed to impact load on small areas or sharp internal corners. The natural color of unfilled PPS is beige, while filled grades are usually black.
Turning is done with carbide tools with sharp edges. PPS is abrasive, and filled grades wear unsuitable inserts down quickly. Cutting speeds should be kept somewhat lower than for POM, and cooling with compressed air or mist lubrication is recommended on longer operations. The material gives fine surfaces if the feed is even. Thread cutting works with standard technique, but always predrill and chamfer the hole edge lightly to avoid tear-out. Bonding is done with special products; a mechanical fastener is usually the practical route.
Typical applications for turned parts in PPS are bushings and sleeves in pumps for aggressive liquids, bearing parts that have to run hot without seizing at standstill, valve guides in process housings and insulators in electronics enclosures near heat sources. Against PEEK, PPS gives a lower raw material cost and fully sufficient performance up to 220 degrees, while PEEK is required for continuous service toward 260 degrees or higher. PVDF can be a better choice in a strongly oxidizing environment but does not take as high temperatures as PPS.
Beige round rod, 1000 mm, in glass fiber reinforced PPS for smaller turned parts that have to keep their shape in heat. The color differs; the material is the same as the black one.
The round rods are supplied cut into manageable lengths and with diameters that suit turning. If you need a specific dimension, a shorter blank or help choosing between PPS, PEEK and PVDF for your application, we are glad to help.
