A round rod in PTFE CP23 GR2 gives you a turnable blank in glass fiber reinforced PTFE. The glass fiber addition fixes the biggest weakness of pure PTFE in technical components, namely cold flow under pressure. The rod keeps its shape even when the part sits tightened or loaded over time, which makes it a more practical choice for turned rings, sleeves and bushings than pure PTFE.
The chemical resistance is the big point of the fluoropolymer, and it is intact. The rod takes acids, bases, chlorine, hydrocarbons and solvents that attack most other engineering plastics. The temperature window is extremely wide, from cryogenic down toward minus 200 degrees up to 260 plus continuously. The fire rating is V0 and the material practically does not drip when it ignites.
The density is around 2.17 g/cm3 for the PTFE base, with some increase from the glass fiber. The hardness and the stiffness are noticeably higher than pure PTFE and the wear resistance against steel is better, especially at higher contact pressure. The coefficient of friction is still low.
Rod is used in places where you turn parts:
Plain bearings and bushings against hardened steel shafts, also in environments with chemicals.
Seal rings and piston rings in valves, pumps and compressors where pure PTFE would creep.
Spacer sleeves and insulators in high temperature applications.
Smaller guide elements in process equipment, food and chemical industry.
Back-up rings behind O-rings in hydraulics.
Machining is done in a conventional lathe with a sharp, carbide tipped insert. The glass fiber wears on the cutting edge, so count on more frequent tool changes than with pure PTFE. Use calm feeds, moderate speed and compressed air cooling to keep the heat build up down. The material cuts and drills without trouble. Bonding is difficult even for glass fiber filled PTFE because the surface is low energy; use mechanical fasteners, shrink fitting or etch the surface.
Keep in mind that the glass fiber makes the material somewhat more abrasive against soft mating surfaces than pure PTFE. For plain bearings against softer metals you should consider a bronze filled or a carbon filled version instead. Against hardened steel, hard chrome or ceramics, CP23 GR2 works without trouble.
The 1000 mm rod in natural has carbon powder and graphite mixed in and is turned into wear resistant bushings that lubricate themselves dry.
The rod is supplied in a natural tone, white to bone white. Diameter, length and any finished turning are adapted to what you need. If you want a different PTFE grade, for example a bronze filled or a carbon filled version for other load cases, or pure PTFE for chemical gaskets without pressure, we will help you find the right grade for your application.
