HS30 with a stud combines two qualities that make both new design and refurbishment simpler: a set of dimensions close to DIN 98 and a rotating grip. The handle is mounted on its threaded steel stud and rotates freely; the hand keeps the same grip through the whole lever movement instead of twisting against the plastic. The difference from a fixed grip shows most clearly with frequent repetition, when the sliding friction against the palm disappears completely.
Three sizes are available as variants: 75 mm length with an M8 thread, 85 mm with M10 and 100 mm with M10. The largest diameter goes from 24 to 32 mm and the stud length is 12 and 16 mm respectively. The stud is in zinc plated steel and the grip in black PA6 with a glossy surface. The grip tapers toward the top in the same design language as the other series in the family, and the shade is colored all the way through the material.
The fact that the dimensions sit close to DIN 98 means the handle can in many cases replace original levers on older machine tools straight off; measure the thread and the length of the old handle, and the chances are good that one of the three sizes matches. For new design, dimensions close to the standard give another advantage: the spare part is easy to find even in ten years.
PA6 stands up to knocks, oils, greases and cutting fluids, and since the color runs through the whole material there is no paint to wear off a handle that is used every day. The zinc plating on the steel stud protects in a normal workshop environment, but in wet or chemically aggressive environments the mounting should be reviewed or another design chosen.
The nylon in the grip also takes up some of the moisture in the air and becomes tougher still over time; the impact resistance thus goes up during the life of the product instead of down. The material does not conduct current and is pleasant to touch even in cold premises, which is more than can be said of a steel lever on a winter morning.
The handle is screwed into the threaded hole of the lever arm; M8 calls for at least 12 mm of thread depth and M10 at least 16 mm for full engagement. Thread locker works without risk since the joint is steel against steel. After that you simply let the grip do its job; the bearing needs neither lubrication nor maintenance.
Typical places are feed levers and rapid feed cranks on lathes, milling machines and drills, clamping levers on dividing heads and vises with a lever and controls on special machines where the designer wants components close to the standard. The cranks on older machine slides are a classic; the original grips dry out, crack and disappear, while the lever remains. The largest size at 100 mm suits levers with long movements and a higher need for force.
The same series is available with a plain hole for press fit if the lever already has a stud. If you need a neater or heavier grip with the same rotating function, HS10 and HS20 with a stud are separate products; together the three series cover threads from M6 to M12.
The standard pack holds 200 handles for the two smaller sizes and 100 for the largest, which suits the maintenance store as well as series production.
A glossy surface also has a practical side in a chip filled environment: cutting fluid and oil mist are wiped off with a rag, and the grip does not go blotchy from grease the way rubberized surfaces can. On a machine that is cleaned every week the lever stays presentable for years.
