HDPE or UHMWPE? An Important Difference

PE-HD or PE-1000? An important difference

Choosing the right plastic can be tricky. We offer both PE-HD and PE-1000, but which one should you choose, and why?

An important difference between PE-HD (also known as PEHD or PE-300) and PE-1000 is their density. PE-HD has a density of around 0.95 g/cm³, whilst PE-1000 is around 0.93 g/cm³. A small difference can make a big difference.

Density and abrasion resistance

PE-1000 is known for its high abrasion resistance, thanks to its low density and high molecular weight. This makes PE-1000 suitable for applications involving high levels of abrasion, such as conveyor belts. PE-HD has slightly lower wear resistance, but is still a good choice for many applications.

So how significant is the difference in practice? Is PE-1000 always the right choice, or is PE-HD sufficient? It depends entirely on the application.

Machining

Both PE-HD and PE-1000 are relatively easy to machine. We offer cutting services for both materials. PE-HD is often slightly easier to handle thanks to its higher density and lower molecular weight. PE-1000 may sometimes require specialised tools.

What happens if you choose PE-1000 when PE-HD would suffice? Will you run into problems? This is an important question to ask.

Food contact

Both PE-HD and PE-1000 are approved for food contact. PE-1000 may be a better choice if the material needs to withstand higher temperatures and stronger chemicals when in direct contact with food.

Applications

PE-HD and PE-1000 are widely used, but PE-1000 is more common in applications involving high abrasion:

  • Chopping boards
  • Conveyor belts
  • Slide tubes

PE-HD is often used where high chemical resistance is required:

  • The food industry
  • Chemical industry
  • Pharmaceutical industry

What happens if you choose the wrong material? Could it affect the end result?

Both materials have their advantages and disadvantages. Consider what is most important for your specific application. Do you have any questions about choosing the right material?
