Polymer hinges solve a couple of problems that metal hinges bring with them. They do not rust, which makes them an obvious choice in wash bays, areas close to food handling and settings that are hosed down or wiped with cleaning agents. They need no lubrication; the pivot runs quietly and evenly without binding, and there is no oil to hold dust and chips. They also insulate electrically, a property that simplifies the building of electrical cabinets and enclosures. And the weight is a fraction of the same hinge in steel, which is felt on large doors with many hinges.

The choice of material also means the hinge takes rough handling. A door that catches a forklift tine tends to bend a steel hinge permanently; a polymer hinge springs back or is replaced in five minutes at low cost. Spare hinges take up no room in the store either, and they hardly age on the shelf.

Typical uses in Swedish industry: inspection hatches on machine guards, doors on electrical and control cabinets, lids on conveyor covers, service hatches on ventilation units and panels in operator cabs. Maintenance departments also use them as replacements when a metal hinge has rusted solid; the hole pattern can often be reused if the dimensions match. Joinery shops and exhibition builders pick from the same range as well, but it is in machine building that the series belongs.

A hinge is rarely the first thing you think about in a design, but it often decides how the door feels. The right size and the right mounting give a door that opens smoothly, closes tight against the seal and stays in line year after year; an undersized choice gives play, misalignment and a door that scrapes in the frame. Spend the extra minutes on the hole pattern at the drawing board, and the fitter is spared hours of adjustment.

When sizing, the rule of thumb is to add one more hinge rather than one size larger. Several hinges spread the load along the edge of the door, reduce the play in each individual pivot and keep the door flat. Check the screw size against the hinge mounting and use a washer if the sheet is thin. Tighten moderately; plastic creeps if the joint is overloaded, and a moderate torque is plenty for a pivot that has to last many years. Load values and temperature limits are given by the manufacturer in the data sheet.

Packaging details are in the manufacturer's data sheet. If you need more sizes or another type of mounting and pivot, the whole hinge series is gathered in the category.

Hinge GJ66 is an injection molded hinge in reinforced nylon (PA6) with a matte black surface, meant for doors, hatches and panels in machine guards and cabinet building. The series comes from a Swedish maker of machine elements and is a standard choice in the engineering industry when the hinge has to be corrosion free, quiet and light.

The leaves have plain through holes for screws; the hole diameter is 4.2 mm in the smallest size and 6.6 mm in the rest. The pivot is fixed, so the hinge is not lift-off, which gives a simple version with no loose parts.

The series covers seven sizes with leaves of equal width: the smallest has a 20 mm leaf width and a length of 30 mm, the rest have a length of 48 mm, a thickness of 9 mm and leaf widths from 26 to 49 mm. You pick the size as a variant on the product page. The dimension designations follow the manufacturer's data sheet, where you also find the hole pattern and center distances so that the hinge can be dropped straight into the CAD model or checked against an existing hole pattern.
