PTFE CP15 in tubular format is used where you need a cylindrical geometry with the chemical resistance of PTFE but with a better load and wear profile than unfilled material. The addition of about 15 percent carbon stabilizes the polymer mechanically; it cold flows less under standing pressure and holds its dimensions better in loaded seals and bushings.
The temperature window is the same as for other PTFE grades. Continuous service up to about 260 degrees, short peaks somewhat higher. The material keeps its flexibility far below zero, a property few other thermoplastics have. A V0 flammability rating per UL 94 is characteristic of PTFE based tubes.
Chemically PTFE CP15 is in principle inert. Aggressive acids, bases, solvents, oxidizing agents; all of it passes without attacking the tube. Water uptake is negligible and the material causes no precipitation or discoloration of process media. That makes the tube usable in analytical laboratories, process filters and corrosive circuits where cleanliness is a requirement.
Carbon filled PTFE also has a gradually lower electrical resistance than pure PTFE. That is not enough for an advanced ESD application, but it is enough for a bushing to lead away small static charges in a pump shaft or a plain bearing.
In tubular format PTFE CP15 is common as:
bushings and shaft seals in pumps and mixers;
wear liners and sliding sleeves in mechanical couplings;
insulating and packing rings in heat exchangers and reactors;
blank stock for turned parts with a large inner diameter and thin walls.
Machining is forgiving. Turning, drilling and milling work with ordinary carbide tools, but the carbon filling grinds edges faster than unfilled PTFE. Use a sharp geometry and low feeds for a fine surface finish. PTFE cannot be bonded without surface activation, so parts are fastened mechanically or through an etched surface.
The tubes are stocked in several combinations of outer and inner diameter. When choosing you usually count on an allowance on wall and length for final cutting, facing and any internal machining, since the material is tough and moves slightly when the load is released. Long tubes also need intermediate support during turning because PTFE is flexible.
The 1000 mm hollow bar in natural has carbon powder blended in and is pre-bored, good for hard wearing bushings and rings with less machining.
