Round Rod in PTFE GF25 25x1500 mm natural
Round rod in PTFE GF25 is PTFE with 25 percent glass fiber, supplied in rod format for turning bearing bushings, sliding elements and other parts that put high demands on both chemistry and mechanics. The higher filler content makes the rod dimensionally stable under load, which is where pure PTFE usually loses out.
PTFE at its base is close to chemically inert. Acids, bases, solvents, oils, fuels and most process chemicals pass by without a reaction. The fire rating is V0, continuous service temperature 260 degrees and the material keeps its properties down to minus 200 degrees. Water absorption is negligible. The density is about 2.17 g/cm³ for PTFE as base material.
The glass fiber addition of 25 percent improves stiffness considerably, cuts creep under pressure and raises wear resistance against mating surfaces. Friction is still low compared with other engineering plastics, but somewhat higher than pure PTFE. For components where several demands meet, chemistry, temperature and mechanical load, GF25 is often a good middle ground between glass and carbon fiber filled PTFE versions.
The rod is typically used for turned parts such as:
Sliding bushings and shaft bearings in pumps, compressors and valve guides.
Sliding elements and guides in high temperature machines.
Components in the process industry and the chemical industry where the part has to take heat, pressure and aggressive media.
Spacer tubes, insulating bushings and gasket rings.
Machining resembles soft brass in terms of cutting behavior, but the glass fiber wears on the cutting edge and calls for carbide or diamond tipped tools for longer series. Sharp inserts, moderate feed and generous chip clearance give the best surface finish. PTFE cannot be bonded conventionally; the surface has to be chemically activated first if a glued joint is required. Press fits and clamped joints are more common in practice.
Thermal expansion is higher than in steel, so when mounting in a metal housing you have to allow for movement during temperature swings. Otherwise a fit that is perfect at 20 degrees can seize at 150 degrees, or go loose at zero.
