Fixed caster, top plate, wheel diameter 27 mm, overall height 29 mm, PA6 hub with soft PUR tread, 25 kg load capacity
Ottoman casters are the small, almost invisible wheels under seating, beds and drawers; they are meant to carry, roll smoothly and stay out of sight. This wheel has a 27 mm diameter, only 29 mm overall height and a fixed bracket with a top plate for screw mounting. The load capacity is 25 kg per wheel, which with four wheels is enough for most seating and storage solutions.
The tread is polyurethane with a surface hardness of 98 Shore A, a hard but still slightly springy quality that rolls easily without scratching. That is an important difference from wheels in fully hard plastic: the polyurethane gives a thin, gentle contact surface against parquet and laminate, and at the same time it does not sink into rugs the way soft rubber wheels do. The tread color is gray and leaves no color marks on the floor.
The hub is in nylon (PA6), a tough and dimensionally stable material that takes the load peaks when someone sits down heavily on one edge of the furniture. The wheel is riveted; bracket and wheel are permanently joined without loose parts, a simple and durable design for the low speeds and short rolling distances involved under a piece of furniture.
The fixed bracket means the wheel rolls in one direction instead of swiveling freely. Under an ottoman, a bed drawer or a sofa module that is often exactly what you want; the furniture moves in a controlled way straight out and straight in without wandering sideways. The combination of a fixed wheel at the back and a swivel caster at the front also occurs, but on small drawers four fixed wheels are plenty.
The top plate measures 42 x 19 mm with a bolt hole spacing of 32 mm and a hole diameter of 4.5 mm, made for two wood screws into the framing of the furniture. The tread width is 13 mm and the whole wheel weighs 0.02 kg. The bracket plate is 1.25 mm thick. With those dimensions the wheel disappears visually under even low furniture, and the overall height of 29 mm steals a minimum of space from the inside volume of the drawer.
Furniture makers and joineries use this type of wheel under ottomans and seating poufs, pull-out bed drawers, TV benches, storage modules and children's room furniture. Trade fair stands and shop fittings with pull-out drawers are common uses as well; the wheel makes heavy drawers easy to pull out without rails.
The temperature range is -20 °C to +50 °C, which covers all normal indoor use. The polyurethane tread takes cleaning agents and damp during floor washing, but the wheel is not made for outdoor use or wet rooms with standing water.
The choice of size between different ottoman casters mostly comes down to floor and load. On smooth wooden floors and laminate, 27 mm is plenty for drawers and poufs; if the furniture stands on a rug, or if it is to be loaded close to the load capacity limit, a larger wheel with the same fastening principle is a better choice since the diameter decides how easily the wheel gets over the pile. The overall height is at the same time the whole point of the small format. 29 mm fits under furniture where larger wheels would show or steal drawer volume, and that is usually where this wheel ends up. Measure the space under the furniture before you choose, and it will be right from the start.
One mounting tip: drill pilot holes for the screws and drive the screws square, so the plate seats flat against the surface. A plate mounted crooked gives play that is heard every time the furniture is moved, and that is a shame on an otherwise quiet design.
