Lever handle HS10 smooth hole 25x84/12x80 mm, fitting in plastic, glossy white
White machine parts are not only a question of looks. In food, pharmaceutical and clean room environments, light components are chosen so that dirt shows immediately and cleaning is easy to check. This lever handle from the HS10 series is injection molded in white PA6 with a glossy surface; a grip that fits in where the machine park is to be light and easy to inspect.
The grip is 84 mm long with a diameter of 25 mm at the mounting and a tapered shape that narrows toward the top. The hole is plain, unthreaded, with a diameter of 12 mm and a depth of 80 mm. The handle is mounted by pressing it onto a turned stud, and the end stays closed and neat since the hole does not go through. The weight is low, as with all nylon, and the grip feels warm and dry even in chilled production rooms; a detail that staff in dairies and freezer stores rarely complain about.
PA6 is a tough and impact resistant nylon that stands up to cleaning agents, oils and greases in normal concentrations. The shade is colored all the way through the material; there is no paint that can flake off into production, which is an argument in itself in sensitive environments. Always check the status of the material against your hygiene requirements in the manufacturer's data sheet, though, since the requirements differ between industries.
Typical homes for a white lever handle are controls on packaging lines, levers on dosing and filling machines, controls on equipment in commercial kitchens and bakeries and laboratory machines where light fittings are the norm. Outside hygiene environments white works just as well as a contrast color; a white lever stands out against dark machine panels and is easier to find with the eye in a stressed situation.
The shape does ergonomic good as well. The tapered profile gives the hand a natural stop against the wider base when you pull the lever toward you, and the narrowing top makes the grip equally comfortable for small and large hands. On levers that are operated hundreds of times per shift that detail is worth taking seriously; a poor grip shows up in the wrist after only a few weeks.
Mounting is by press fit. Make the stud just over the hole dimension and preferably lightly knurled; the spring in the nylon then holds the handle in place with even pressure. If it goes stiffly the handle can be warmed in hot water before pressing, an old workshop trick that works well on nylon. Adhesive intended for nylon gives extra security where the lever takes knocks.
The size 25x84 mm with a 12 mm hole is the white version in the shop. The HS10 series in black comes in nine sizes as its own product, and the same grip is also available with a threaded stud or a threaded bushing; if you stay with the same series across the whole machine the controls get a uniform look whatever the mounting type.
The manufacturer's standard pack holds 250 handles. For machine builders in series production that means an even shade and even quality across the whole batch.
The choice of material also has a safety side. Nylon does not conduct current and never turns sharp when it is damaged; if a plastic handle breaks it leaves blunt fracture surfaces instead of the burrs and splinters of metal. The handle also never rusts, so there is no corrosion dust that can end up in the product; another small argument that weighs more in hygiene environments than in the workshop.
