A sheet in PFA is used where PTFE does not go far enough because the material has to be melt welded, film welded or thermoformed. PFA is a high purity perfluorinated fluoroplastic that inherits practically all the chemical and thermal performance of PTFE, but in a form that behaves like an ordinary thermoplastic in processing.
The material resists almost every chemical that turns up in industry. Strong acids, bases, oxidizing agents, solvents and most process gases pass without leaving a trace. PFA is also one of the cleanest plastics on the market, with very low outgassing and low leaching of ionic contaminants. It is exactly this combination that makes the sheet an obvious choice in semiconductors, pharmaceuticals, fine chemicals and advanced analytical equipment.
The service temperature is high and the material keeps its shape and elasticity far above the normal industrial range. The sheet can be used continuously at process temperatures of several hundred degrees, although mechanical load should be weighed in when choosing thickness at the highest levels. At room temperature PFA is relatively soft and flexible; with rising temperature it loses further stiffness, so do not let it carry heavy load without support.
The coefficient of friction is low, roughly on a level with PTFE. The sheet is therefore a good choice as a sliding surface, lining layer or seal in environments where better materials for plain bearings cannot take the medium. It is non-stick, which means deposits do not fasten on the surface; processes that otherwise require frequent cleaning can run longer between stops.
Practical uses are lining of reactors, valves and piping, enclosures for aggressive atmospheres, process sheets in chemical baths, diaphragm surfaces in pumps, lids on clean baths and containers for ultrapure liquid. In the semiconductor industry the sheet is used as base material for wafer handling and chemical distribution where pure PFA is a requirement in the specification.
Machining is uncomplicated. The sheet can be sawn, milled, drilled and cut with sharp tools. It can be thermoformed and melt welded, which opens the way for welded enclosures and seals with the same chemical performance in the joint as in the stock. Bonding requires surface activation, chemical etching for example, since pure PFA is hard to bind to with conventional adhesives.
Thickness is normally governed by mechanical load, lining requirements or the temperature in the process. For pure lining layers a thin sheet is often enough; for load bearing constructions heavier stock or a support structure is required.
Without fabric on the back, the pure PFA roll comes at 10000x1500 mm in natural color, for anyone who wants to weld the material in place instead of bonding it. The format is enough for large areas in one piece.
