Round rod in PEEK Victrex 450 is the base grade of unreinforced PEEK, and it often ends up as the reference material when you are looking for a plastic that has to handle both high temperature and rough chemistry. It is beige in its natural color and comes in a wide span of diameters, from finger-thick rods up to heavy blanks for larger parts.
The material takes 260 degrees continuously and keeps measurable strength even at 300 degrees over shorter intervals. The lowest temperature lies far below zero without the material turning brittle. If you design components for steam systems, engine compartments, semiconductor tooling or medical autoclave equipment, that means a PEEK part can replace a metal component and remove corrosion and friction at the same time.
Mechanically, tensile strength sits around 116 MPa and ball indentation hardness around 253 N/mm². The unreinforced grade also keeps its toughness, so the part takes a certain amount of elastic deformation without breaking. The fire rating is V0, water absorption only 0.03 percent. The dimensions stay stable even in damp environments and through temperature swings.
Chemically PEEK stands up to strong acids, bases, oils, fuels and most organic solvents. It is one of the few plastics that handles long-term contact with steam, which makes it common in sterilization and process equipment. Radiation resistance is good, so the material holds up in environments where other polymers would break down.
The round rod is the raw stock for turned and milled parts. You cut it to length, clamp it in the chuck and produce bushings, shaft stubs, valve bodies, sliding rings, insulating sleeves for power electronics and connectors, stuffing box supports, wear rings in pumps, and components for semiconductor equipment where metals are ruled out. In medical technology PEEK often sits in parts that have to take repeated autoclaving or gamma radiation.
Machining is done with sharp carbide tools. The material insulates against heat, which means the chip has to carry the heat away. Moderate feed, high cutting speed and keen edges give a fine surface. Use compressed air or internal cooling for deeper holes, and avoid cutting oil and coolant that can mix into cleanliness-sensitive applications. The material can be threaded, milled and drilled without preheating at normal dimensions. At large wall thicknesses, annealing after roughing can reduce residual stresses.
The diameter is set by the largest outside dimension of the part plus machining allowance. For solid parts the round rod is often the simplest choice, and for bushings with large inside diameters a hollow bar can save turning time and material. The color of the base grade is beige natural, which is pure PEEK without additives; if the part has to be visible and color-coded, a black PEEK grade is also available when volume allows.
Victrex 450 is pure PEEK without additives, and the 1000 mm rod is turned into bushings and valve seats the same way as the rest of the beige PEEK.
