A round rod in PVDF gives you a machinable fluoropolymer that stands up to a wide chemical attack without losing shape or strength. The material holds long-term temperatures up to 150 degrees continuously, has a V0 flammability rating per UL 94 and a water absorption of only 0.04 percent. The density sits around 1.78 g/cm³, which you notice in the hand: the rod feels heavier than it looks.
Chemically, PVDF is one of the few engineering plastics that handle strongly oxidizing environments. Halogens, concentrated acids, chlorinated solvents and most organic chemicals do not bite. The exceptions are hot strong bases, polar aprotic solvents such as DMF and certain amines; there you should verify against a chemical resistance table before the component is fitted in. The material is also approved for food contact per FDA in the base grade.
For turning and milling PVDF is rewarding. It chips finely, can be ground and polished to a low surface roughness and holds its dimensions better than softer fluoropolymers such as PTFE. Sharp HSS or coated carbide, a moderate feed and plenty of cooling is enough; avoid letting the working temperature creep above 150 degrees during machining, because the material then starts to creep. Threading works without special tricks and bonding requires a primer or flame activation.
Practical applications are many in the chemical and process industry. Valve bodies, valve parts, conical seals, seat bearings and guide bushings in pumps are classic choices. In the semiconductor and electronics industry the round rod is used for turned fixtures, insulators and chuck parts where cleanliness and chemical stability are critical. Wear parts in mill and mixer environments, packing rings against aggressive media and equipment parts in wastewater treatment plants are other typical cases.
Compared with PTFE, PVDF is considerably stiffer and holds its shape better under load, but has a lower temperature ceiling and slightly weaker chemical resistance against extreme oxidizing and reducing agents. Against POM you get poorer machinability and a higher price, but dramatically better chemical resistance and flame resistance. Against PEEK, PVDF is cheaper and has V0 in the base grade, but does not reach PEEK's mechanical performance or temperature ceiling.
When choosing a diameter, count on turning stock being available in a number of standard dimensions. If you need an exact final diameter, pick the nearest larger blank and turn it down. Lengths are cut to order. PVDF has relatively low thermal conductivity, so in continuous series machining it can pay to let the parts cool between operations to hold the dimensional tolerance.
The natural color is bone white to slightly translucent. Darker grades and black colored PVDF exist but belong to special order. UV resistance is good outdoors, but with long exposure the surface can chalk slightly; pigmented grades hold the color longer.
Need help choosing the right diameter or working out whether PVDF is enough against your medium? Send us a line with temperatures, concentrations and load and we will come back with a concrete suggestion.
The double length, 2000 mm in natural, reduces waste when you turn several parts in one setup.
