Sheet in Frisylen JN 480 is a cross-linked polyethylene foam in a denser grade. The density is higher than in the softest polyethylene foams, which lets the material carry load better without collapsing, while the damping against shocks remains.
The material has a closed cell structure. It shuts out water and moisture, so the sheet keeps its properties in damp environments or with condensation too. The foam does not swell, and the surface can be wiped down without liquid being drawn in. That is a decisive property for inserts in reusable transport crates and flight cases where the same foam has to survive hundreds of transports.
JN 480 is used mainly where the standard grade feels too soft. Heavy components, tools and electronic units get a more dimensionally stable base that does not compress flat during handling. The foam cuts easily with a water jet, a CNC router or a band saw, and thicker sheets are die cut into fitted inserts. Joints are hot air welded or bonded with a contact adhesive intended for polyolefins.
In gasket applications JN 480 works between flanges and covers where a soft rubber gasket would be squeezed askew under bolt torque. The higher density gives a more even surface compression and a reliable sealing pressure across the whole face. The material takes water based media, mild chemistry and a fair amount of oil, but stays away from aromatic solvents and strong oxidizers.
Thermally the material works in the same range as other polyethylene, roughly minus 50 to plus 70 degrees in continuous use. It takes short heat loads, but permanent set starts to show clearly above 80 degrees. At lower temperatures the foam stays compliant and does not turn brittle the way rigid plastics do.
JN 480 also has good energy absorption in sudden impacts. That is why the foam turns up in impact protection on internal material handling systems, around rollers and conveyors, and as damping strips between components that must not rub against each other. Machining is clean, dust free and calls for no protective measures beyond normal ventilation.
Do you want to land on the right density for your particular weight and impact profile? Get in touch and we will help you place JN 480 against BNL, SP and XL 75 based on what you actually need from the sheet. This product, Frisylen JN 480 2000x1000 mm natural, has the format 2000x1000 mm, which makes it easy to place into an existing structure.
