Sheet in Frisylen SP is a cross-linked polyethylene foam in a softer grade. The cell structure is fine and regular, which gives the material a compliant pressure against surfaces and even damping without hard spots. The closed cell structure at the same time shuts out moisture, so the sheet does not dry out and does not lose its elasticity over time.
The soft character makes the SP grade suitable where the object to be protected is fragile. Optics, glass, painted surfaces and electronics get a base that neither scratches nor presses marks. The foam can be cut into intricate shapes with a knife, a water jet or a laser, and thinner sheets are die cut directly. Bonding is done with contact adhesive or double sided tape intended for polyolefins.
Acoustically SP absorbs part of the mid to high frequencies, above all when the foam is faced with a denser surface film. That makes the material useful as inner lining in covers and housings where self resonance needs damping, even though it does not replace dedicated acoustic panels in fully fitted studio spaces.
As a gasket material SP suits best where the sealing pressure is low. The foam adapts to uneven surfaces and fills gaps that harder materials would leave open. Remember that the material collapses in thickness under high point load, so for load carrying seals JN 480 or BNL is often a better fit. For covers, lids and access hatches, on the other hand, SP is exactly the right level of give.
Thermally Frisylen SP works in the range of roughly minus 50 to plus 70 degrees. The foam holds its shape under moderate long term load, but is compressed permanently if the load becomes high and continuous. That is part of the character of the material, not a weakness, and it is handled most easily by counting on a slightly thicker sheet from the start.
Chemically the material takes water based media, lighter oils, alcohol and most common cleaning agents. Gasoline, aromatic solvents and strong acids or bases should be avoided in longer contact. UV resistance is limited without surface protection, so sheets mounted outdoors are best faced with a denser protective film or placed in a sheltered spot.
Do you need help finding the right level of softness for your application? Tell us what the object weighs and how it lands in transport, and we will point out SP or a denser grade. This product, Frisylen SP 1000x500 mm green, has the format 1000x500 mm, which makes it easy to place into an existing structure.
