A Sheet in PEEK Ast is a modified PEEK grade where the material is modified down to be conductive. In practice that means the surface resistivity sits in the antistatic range, so a machined part does not build up static charges that could damage sensitive electronics or attract particles in clean room environments.
Thermally PEEK Ast is at the same level as pure PEEK, with 260 degrees continuous use and peaks up to 300 degrees. The fire rating is V0 according to UL 94. Water absorption is low, around 0.03 percent, so dimensional stability is good even in buildings with a changing climate. For an antistatic material this is an unusually wide operating range; many competing ESD plastics are limited by temperature long before PEEK is.
Mechanically the tensile strength according to ISO 527 is around 91 MPa and the ball indentation hardness around 280. Impact strength is around 43 kJ/m². Those are strong figures for a conductive plastic and mean PEEK Ast can be used for structural parts, not only for thin dissipative elements. The additive gives the material a dark, almost black color, which is also a visual marker for ESD parts in a fixture collection.
The sheet is used in semiconductor manufacturing, for fixtures and wafer handling accessories, in test jigs for electronics, as holders and guides in automation equipment where static charges would give false alarms, and in clean rooms where the combination of ESD protection plus heat resistance matters. It is also of interest for petrochemicals and fuel handling, where electrostatic dissipation is a safety question.
For machining the same guidelines apply as for pure PEEK, but keep an extra eye on tool wear. The additives that give the antistatic function can be abrasive, which makes carbide tools and short intervals between checks pay off. Use sharp tools, a positive rake angle and plenty of cooling. The grooves should be blown clean during the operation, since fine dust from PEEK Ast can be conductive and likes to settle where it should not.
The sheet is usually supplied in black and in standard thicknesses. We cut to the size you want. Do you need help judging whether PEEK Ast or a carbon fiber filled PEEK suits your ESD requirement best? Get in touch and we will go through the specification.
In the full 3000 x 500 mm format the black antistatic sheet is enough for several parts in a row, for strips and holders that have to sit close to spark sensitive equipment without charging up.
