Sheet in PPS Mod 3000x500 mm black

PPS Mod is a modified variant of polyphenylene sulfide where the base polymer has been supplemented with tougher additives. The result is a material that takes the same high temperatures and chemical strain as pure PPS, but with better impact resistance and a lower risk of brittle fractures during machining. The sheet format gives you a stable starting piece for milling, turning and sawing.

Technically the material is around 1.36 g/cm³ in density, which is roughly the same area as pure PPS. The long-term temperature in operation is around 220 °C, and the material takes short peaks beyond that without losing its shape. The fire rating is V0, which makes PPS Mod interesting where self-extinguishing materials are required by regulations or a risk assessment. Water absorption is negligible, so the sheet does not move with moisture; that is valuable with tight tolerances in a damp or varying environment.

Chemically PPS, modified or not, is one of the most resistant thermoplastics. The material stands up to strong acids, bases, solvents and oils across a wide temperature range. That makes the sheet suitable for components in chemical process industry, heat exchangers, pump housings and parts that have to sit in aggressive vapors without going soft. The modified grade also handles more of the vibration and impact found in pump applications and mechanical machine parts.

Common applications for sheets in PPS Mod are milled machine parts such as bearings, slide rails, insulators and holders in hot process equipment. The high form stability makes the material attractive for precision parts where the measurements have to stay put even after hours at 200 °C. In electrical applications PPS is appreciated for its high volume resistivity and dimensional stability, which makes the sheet useful as an electrical insulator in heat loaded circuits.

In machining, PPS Mod behaves somewhat more kindly than pure PPS thanks to the higher toughness. Tool wear is still noticeable, though, so carbide tools and good chip evacuation are to be recommended. Heat build-up in milling is kept down with sharp edges and moderate feeds, and cooling air is often enough as cooling. The material can be polished if needed, but a lightly textured surface is more common in technical parts.

The sheet format comes in pressed or extruded dimensions and we are happy to cut a blank to drawing. Keep in mind that compensating for post-shrinkage is rarely a problem with PPS Mod; the material is well adjusted already from the supplier.
