Sheet in PVDF-C PB is polyvinylidene fluoride in a copolymer version with an antibacterial modification. PB stands for an additive line that holds back bacterial growth right in the surface, which makes the sheet relevant in environments where hygiene and chemical resistance have to work together. So you get the strong resistance of PVDF against aggressive media combined with a surface that counteracts biofilm.
The chemical resistance covers concentrated acids, alkalis, chlorine, ozone, hydrogen peroxide and most organic solvents. The material is flame rated V0 per UL 94 and self-extinguishing. The service temperature is 150 degrees long term with some margin for short periods, and at minus 20 degrees the sheet keeps its toughness without turning brittle. Water uptake is negligible, around 0.04 percent, which gives dimensional stability in damp environments and during cleaning with steam or chemicals.
The density of 1.78 g/cm³ is high for a thermoplastic and the sheet feels heavy in the hand compared to PE or PP in the same dimension. That comes from the weight of the fluorine atoms in the polymer chain and it goes hand in hand with the material handling such aggressive environments.
Typical applications for the sheet:
Lining of tanks and troughs in the food and beverage industry.
Cutting boards, slide plates and process panels in pharmaceutical production.
Linings in chlorination plants and water treatment works.
Protective and wear surfaces in electrolysis cells and surface treatment where the bacterial resistance makes cleaning routines easier.
The sheet is machined with conventional tooling for thermoplastics. Use sharp carbide inserts, moderate feed and cooling with compressed air. When sawing, fine-toothed blades give clean cuts. The sheet can be formed by thermoforming at temperatures around 170 to 180 degrees and welded with hot air or extrusion, then with welding rod in the same PVDF grade to keep the chemical resistance through the joint.
The antibacterial effect sits in the surface and does not disappear with normal wear. That means cut and sawn surfaces are active as well, which is an advantage compared to surface coatings that can wear off.
Choosing between PVDF-C PB and stainless steel, the sheet weighs less, insulates better electrically and is unaffected by many chemicals that attack the steel. Stainless has its place where mechanical demands dominate, but in a purely chemical environment PVDF-C is often the simpler choice.
