Star wheels and drive wheels: keeping your line on pace

In conveyors, packaging lines and filling machines, star wheels and drive wheels control product flow. They must grip, drive and place products without wearing belts, chains or packages. Plastic gives lower weight, quieter running and less maintenance than metal, while service life stays long when the material is chosen right.

What problem do they solve?

A drive wheel or star wheel transfers motion and force to a belt, chain or individual products. Metal wheels are heavy, noisy and can cut or wear what they drive. In food and pharmaceutical environments there are added requirements for food-approved materials and grease-free operation. Plastic wheels solve this with low friction, low weight and good wear resistance, without rusting or needing lubrication.

Materials that fit

The choice depends on load, speed, temperature and whether the wheel has direct food contact. Common materials in our range:

  • PA: high impact strength and load capacity. Fits drive wheels, larger star wheels and parts that take shocks.
  • POM-C: low friction and good dimensional stability. Used for smaller drive wheels and where tooth or grip surfaces must hold close tolerances.
  • PE-1000: extreme wear resistance and low friction. Works excellently where the wheel rubs against a belt or guide.
  • PE-HD: impact resistant and food approved. A cost-effective choice for larger wheels and rollers.
  • PET: stiff and dimensionally stable with low friction. Fits precision applications with tight tolerances.

Typical applications

  • Drive wheels and star wheels on conveyors.
  • Guide and positioning wheels in packaging lines.
  • Sprockets and idler rollers.
  • Parts in food and pharmaceutical industries.
  • Labeling and filling machines.

Advantages over metal

  • Much lower weight, saving energy and reducing bearing load.
  • Quieter running and less vibration.
  • No rust and no need for lubrication in most cases.
  • Less wear on belts, chains and products.
  • Can be machined to exact tooth profiles and fits without finishing.
