Agriculture and fish farming
Plastic for weather, water and manure
Out on the farm and at the fish farms the material meets weather, water, sludge and chemicals, often all at once and always year round. Plastic does not rust, weighs little and can be shaped to fit. The right material choice is the difference between a part that lasts one season and one that lasts ten years.
Requirements and challenges
- Constant exposure to weather, sun, rain and frost
- Long term contact with water, manure and salt
- Cleaning agents and disinfection that attack many materials
- Mechanical wear from scrapers, feed and conveying systems
- Long operating seasons with little room for maintenance
Recommended materials
Impact resistant, chemically resistant and unaffected by long term contact with water. Scrapers, sliding surfaces and tanks.
Light and chemically resistant. Tanks, tubes and feeding equipment.
Strong and impact resistant. Wheels, gears and mechanical parts.
Where the wear is the problem rather than the chemistry, for example in scraper systems.
Common applications
Scrapers and guide plates
In manure systems and fish farming, where PE-HD and PE-1000 take both the wet and the abrasion.
Wheels, bearings and sliding surfaces
PA6 C carries load in a damp environment without rusting or needing lubrication.
Tanks and containers
PP and PE-HD for feed, water and chemicals, weldable and easy to repair.
Guards and hatches
Impact resistant sheets that take a season outdoors without going brittle.
Why choose plastic?
Metal and wood both have a short life in this environment. Metal rusts, and wood soaks up water and goes moldy. Plastic does neither, takes a high pressure wash and can be welded in place when something breaks. For year round outdoor use you pick a UV stabilized grade, otherwise the material goes brittle after a few seasons in the sun.
