The edgeband is the detail that separates a finished display from a cut sheet. This is a white edgeband meant for 16 mm SB Fibre board, delivered as two rolls of 50 meters; 100 running meters per pack in total. When the board is cut the core is exposed in the cut, and that surface is what the edgeband is there to cover.

A paper based display board consists of flat face layers around a light weight core, and as long as the board is whole it is the face layer the viewer sees. The moment the board is cut to format, the cut edge shows the structure of the core. On a campaign sign that stands for two weeks that may not matter; on an exhibition counter at eye level, a store interior that has to last a season or a display that is going to be photographed, the open edge makes the whole build look cheaper than it is. The edgeband hides the core, gives the edge an even white surface and makes it less sensitive to knocks and dirt in handling as well. In other words the band does the same job as the edging strip on a kitchen worktop, but for light weight construction.

The white color is chosen to follow the surface of the board itself. White against white gives an edge that does not draw the eye, and for printed boards white works as a neutral frame, rather like a mat around a picture. The pack weighs 3.6 kg with both rolls; manageable in a production environment where the band travels between cutting, edging and packing.

Sixteen millimeters is a common thickness for load carrying display parts: podiums, counters, end panels and shelf carrying sections. The band is meant for exactly that board thickness, so check that your parts really are cut from 16 mm board before you order. For other thicknesses you pick the matching band in the right width instead of trying to work with excess width that has to be folded or trimmed.

Count running meters before production. Measure the perimeter of the edges to be covered per display, multiply by the number of units and add waste for cutting and corners. A hundred meters sounds like a lot but goes faster than you think in a series; a single counter with four visible edges of one meter each takes four meters, and a series of twenty counters takes eighty. Save the short pieces, they are often enough for small edges on the next job. Weigh in where the edges sit as well; edges at picking height wear the most and should be banded first if the budget forces a priority.

Work methodically when you edge. A clean and dry board edge gives the best result, a sharp knife gives neat finishes in the corners, and the band should be laid at a calm pace with the contact checked along the whole edge rather than pulled into place at full speed. It is a step that goes quickly with routine but punishes carelessness right away; a wavy edge shows from ten meters away.

For sign makers who deliver to chains there is one more reason to band the edges: uniformity. Twenty stores that each get a display are supposed to show the same thing, and untreated edges age differently depending on how much they are handled. Banded edges look the same in store number one and store number twenty, even after repacking and moving.
