A sheet in PPE FR is flame retardant polyphenylene ether, a material developed for interiors in aircraft and rail vehicles where the fire requirements are not open to negotiation. The grade meets V0 according to UL 94 and complies with FAR 25.853, the aviation fire requirement for cabin interiors, with low smoke generation as part of the package.

Weight is the next argument. The density is 1.10 g/cm³, low for a flame retardant engineering plastic; every part switched from a heavier material saves grams, and in aircraft and trains grams count. The density also means a full sheet is handled without lifting aids.

It is worth putting that figure in context. Many flame retardant alternatives are higher in density, PVC for example around 1.4 g/cm³ and filled grades higher still, while PPE FR reaches its fire class and keeps the low weight. That is the whole point of the material.

PPE as a polymer has two properties that strengthen the package: very low water absorption and fine dimensional stability. The parts keep their measurements whatever the humidity, which makes the material reliable in long runs of fitting parts, and the electrical insulation properties are good enough for electrical and electronic components where flame retardancy is required at the same time.

The maximum continuous service temperature is 85 °C according to the manufacturer's data. That is enough for interiors, enclosures and most electrical applications, but it places the grade below PC and PEEK on the temperature ladder; if you need both V0 and a substantially higher temperature you have to look at other materials, for example PEEK.

The choice between flame retardant materials is rarely only about the fire class. PC with flame retardant gives higher temperature resistance but heavier parts, while PPE FR combines V0, low weight, stable geometry and very good hydrolysis resistance in one and the same semi-finished product; for cabin interiors and electrical components that is often exactly the combination the designer is looking for, and that is why the discussion often ends in PPE FR as long as the temperature stays below 85 °C.

Smoke generation is a parameter of its own in rail vehicle and aviation contexts. It is not enough that the material stops burning; it must not fill a cabin with smoke either. Low smoke emission is therefore part of the profile of the grade, documented in the manufacturer's data.

Chemical resistance is moderate, as in most amorphous plastics. Water, cleaning agents and most water based media are fine, while strong solvents should be avoided; check the media list in the data sheet if the part is going to be cleaned chemically. Alcohols in low concentrations are usually fine, aromatics are not.

Typical parts are panels, spacers and brackets in cabin interiors, holders and mounting parts in rail vehicles as well as prototype parts in certification work where documented fire behavior is required already at the test stage. That means armrests, hatches and duct covers where every component has a documented fire requirement in the certification of the vehicle.

The electrical side is the other big niche. The combination of V0, good insulation properties and stable geometry makes the grade suitable for insulators, connection parts and enclosure parts where the fire rating is required by the design standard rather than by aviation regulations.

Machining is simple; the material is dimensionally stable, low in internal stress and mills with a fine result in both HSS and carbide. The chips are short and the machine stays clean easily; no coolant is needed at normal cutting data. The sheet format 1220x610 mm is manageable on the milling table, and if you need blanks in other measurements we cut them to drawing before delivery.
