Swivel casters with a gray polyurethane tread on a hub of polyamide (PA6), sold in a 2-pack and intended for the underframe of box conveyors, conveyor sections and material carts. Polyurethane is the quieter and more floor friendly alternative to all plastic wheels: the tread damps structure borne noise against concrete, takes up small unevenness and leaves no marks behind. The casters have a mounting plate, ball bearings and a total lock brake.

The tread hardness of 98° Shore A places the wheel between soft rubber wheels and hard nylon wheels. You get a tread that rolls easily but still swallows floor joints, chips and grains of grit instead of bouncing over them; you hear it in the noise level and feel it in how evenly a loaded section rolls. The dynamic load capacity is 225 kg at 4 km/h according to the manufacturer's data sheet, in fact somewhat higher than for the equivalent wheel with a tread in PA6.

The dimensions in brief: wheel diameter 100 mm, tread width 36 mm and overall height 132 mm. The plate is 105x85 mm in 3 mm sheet, with a hole spacing of 80x60 mm and slotted holes of 12.5x9 mm that give room for adjustment during fitting. The offset is 41 mm and the swing radius 129 mm; plan for free space matching the swing radius around each caster position so the fork can rotate freely. The bracket is in 2.5 mm sheet, the temperature range runs from minus 30 °C to plus 70 °C and the net weight for the pair is 3.2 kg.

A total lock brake means that both the rolling of the wheel and the swiveling of the fork are locked with one and the same press of the foot. Under a conveyor section that makes a real difference: when boxes or crates are braked against an end stop a push arises along the length of the conveyor, and a caster with only a wheel brake can then twist and let the section wander off. Lock two diagonally placed casters and the section stays where you put it.

Polyurethane has high resistance to wear and good resistance to oils and greases, clearly better than rubber. At the same time the material is more sensitive to long term point loading; do not let a fully loaded frame stand still for weeks in exactly the same spot, because then the tread can get a temporary flat that feels like a thumping while rolling until it has recovered. For frames that mostly stand parked the version with a PA6 tread can therefore be a wiser choice, while polyurethane wins in places where the sections are rolled daily and the noise requirements are high.

Out on the floor the casters often sit under movable box conveyors in packing departments where stations are linked up as needed, in e-commerce warehouses with flows that vary by season and under assembly carts that are rolled forward and locked at the station. The gray tread also suits premises where light floors are to be kept free of wheel marks; unlike black rubber wheels the polyurethane leaves no streaks behind, however often the section is moved.

The combination of ball bearings and a polyurethane tread gives low starting friction, which shows most when heavy sections have to be set in motion. Anyone who moves conveyors several times per shift will appreciate the difference in both force and noise compared with simpler wheels on plain bearings.

Fit with four screws per plate and check the floor contact on all the casters before the section is loaded. A complete drawing and dimension sheet are in the documentation of the manufacturer, and there you also find details about the wheel mounting and the material.

Do you want to compare polyurethane against PA6 for your particular conveyor and your floor? We will help you choose right.
