A sheet in PFA AB is a version of high purity perfluorinated fluoroplastic where one side has a textured surface. The texture gives the adhesive something to hold on to when bonding and laminating against a substrate, which is exactly what makes ordinary PFA awkward to fasten. On the smooth side the sheet keeps the typical PFA properties, a surface nothing sticks to and that handles almost any chemical you can name.
The material resists practically every chemical that turns up in industrial processes. Strong acids, bases, oxidizing agents, process gases and organic solvents pass without leaving a trace. PFA is also very clean, with low outgassing and low leaching of ionic contaminants, which makes the sheet useful in semiconductor, pharmaceutical and analytical applications. The AB version keeps these properties on the smooth side; only the bonding side has been modified so it can be laminated to a load bearing substrate.
The service temperature is high and the range is wide, from deep cold levels up to several hundred degrees continuously. PFA is relatively soft at room temperature and loses further stiffness as the temperature rises, so the sheet is normally used as a lining layer or release surface against a load bearing structure rather than as a self supporting construction. The textured back then binds the sheet to the substrate with ordinary industrial adhesives.
Friction is low and the smooth side is non-stick. Deposits do not take hold and cleaning gets easier. That makes the sheet welcome as a process surface in curing machines, laminating presses, composite work and tanks where residues otherwise settle.
Practical uses are lining of reactors, vessels and pipes, release layers in curing processes, laminating plates in the composite industry, process surfaces in pharmaceutical machinery and base material for wafer and chemical handling. In the composite industry the AB version is often used as a permanent release surface in mold tooling, where the sheet is bonded to steel and works as direct contact against the curing part.
Machining is uncomplicated. The sheet can be sawn, milled, drilled, cut and thermoformed. It can be melt welded in joints where the same chemical performance is required on both sides of the weld. For bonding, ordinary industrial two component adhesives are used against the textured side; it then skips the surface activation steps that pure PFA normally requires.
Thickness is normally governed by whether the sheet is a pure lining layer against a substrate or has to take mechanical load. Thicker stock gives a marginally better chemical barrier over time, but it is usually the total thickness that is limited first by the laminating capacity in the finished construction.
The roll measures 10000x1500 mm and comes in natural color, meant to be rolled out over larger areas in one go. The aramid fabric on the back, which is what AB stands for, gives the adhesive something to grip since pure fluoroplastic cannot be bonded. That is how large tank walls and ducts in the chemical industry are lined without unnecessary joints.
