Sheet in PVDF PB is polyvinylidene fluoride with a stable pigment additive, usually black, which gives the material an even dark shade right through the cross section. The density is about 1.78 g/cm3 and the sheet feels dense and stiff compared with ordinary polyolefins. The pigmentation does not affect the chemical resistance to any noticeable degree and the sheet keeps the base properties of PVDF.
The material handles continuous service around 150 degrees with shorter peaks slightly above, and stays usable down to about -20 degrees. The fire rating is V0, which means fast self-extinguishing once the ignition source is removed. Water uptake is negligible, around 0.04 percent, so the sheet holds its dimensions even in a water-borne environment over a long time.
The chemical resistance is the reason PVDF is used instead of cheaper alternatives. The sheet stands up to concentrated acids, many bases, chlorinated solvents, alcohols, halogens and oxidizing agents. Alongside PTFE, PVDF is the most common choice in the chemical process industry where PE-HD or PP is not enough. The pigmentation can also make it easier to spot cracks, discoloration or deposits on the surface, which is a concrete advantage in inspection-heavy environments.
UV resistance is good and the sheet copes with outdoor use without breaking down at the rate many olefins do. Mechanically PVDF is sturdy and dimensionally stable, which makes the sheet suitable as a tank wall, a base plate in an acid bath, lining in pipework, a wear plate in agitators or a screen in surface finishing lines.
Machining is done with standard tools for plastic. The sheet can be milled, turned, drilled, sawn and water jet cut with sharp edges and moderate feed to avoid heat build-up. Welding is carried out with hot gas or the extrusion technique at around 360-400 degrees, with welding rod from the same PVDF family. Bonding requires pretreatment with plasma or etching to raise the surface energy.
Common parts in PVDF PB are tank end walls, anti-stick guards, drip strips, splash guards in surface finishing baths and process benches in the semiconductor and pharmaceutical industry. When the design has to be dark for readability, or where the pigmentation is part of the design requirement, the PB grade is a natural choice. For contact surfaces with food or pharmaceuticals, the approvals of the pigment are always checked against the right regulations.
The thickness is chosen from the function: thinner sheets for lining and screens, thicker for load-bearing and wear surfaces. Get in touch if you want to check the available dimensions against your drawings.
In the 3000x1500 mm format the sheet covers large areas, and the laminated backing lets it be built in as a chemical-resistant inner layer in a tank.
