PE-HD cutting boards: kind to the blade, approved for food

In the food industry a cutting board must be kind to knife edges, easy to clean and able to take mechanical stress day after day. Wood cracks and absorbs moisture and bacteria; metal dulls knives and is heavy. PE-HD is the most common choice because it handles all of this and is approved for food contact.

What problem do they solve?

Cutting boards in slaughterhouses, bakeries and commercial kitchens face sharp knives, moisture, cleaning chemicals and repeated mechanical loads. The material must not crack, form grooves where bacteria can grow or dull the blades. It also has to be possible to clean thoroughly between shifts. PE-HD meets most of these requirements in a single material.

Materials that fit

PE-HD is the standard choice, but other plastics can fit depending on wear resistance and stiffness requirements:

  • PE-HD: food approved, impact resistant and easy to clean. Wears the knife edge less than harder materials and is the most common choice for most cutting boards.
  • PA: harder and more wear resistant. Fits where the board is exposed to heavier mechanical stress or where less groove formation is critical.
  • POM-C: stiff and dimensionally stable with low moisture absorption. Used in special cases where precise fit and stiffness are needed.

Typical applications

  • Slaughterhouses and meat processing.
  • Bakeries and food preparation.
  • Vegetable and fruit processing.
  • Commercial and catering kitchens.
  • Cutting tables and workbenches in food production.

Advantages over metal

  • Wears the knife edge less than metal, extending blade life.
  • Does not rust and withstands moisture, cleaning chemicals and food acids.
  • Lower weight makes handling easier, especially for large boards.
  • Can be cut, welded and repaired as needed.
  • Available in different colors to separate raw and cooked goods in HACCP work.
